I’ve been walking a lot longer than I’ve been photographing. It started with Scouts in the North Island, carried on through university, and never really stopped — I moved down to Christchurch to study and found the hills here are better than anything I’d been used to. The camera came much later, and for a fairly simple reason: I kept getting back from places and not being able to show anyone what they were like.

So that’s still how it works. The walk is the point and the camera comes along for the ride. Long days, Arthur’s Pass more than anywhere else at the moment, and I photograph whatever’s worth stopping for — usually the view once I’m high enough, and best of all with fresh snow still sitting on the tops. I’m an amateur and very much still working it out. Some trips I come home with nothing.

The other half of it is birds. I’ve taken heaps of photos of Kea (My favourite), so I’m keeping a list of the natives I still want, some I’ve seen and fumbled or not had my camera, some I’ve never laid eyes on. That’s here, and it gets updated when I’m lucky.
